Fearlessly Facing 50

March 8, 2010 at 11:48 am 3 comments

I recently turned 50 and a LOT of people told me “50 is the new 30!”  It would be great news if I didn’t feel like I’m only 21!

Thankfully, turning 50 didn’t faze me at all.  So far, I’m really enjoying this new decade and extremely excited about what lies ahead of me.  I’ve worked hard for these 50 years, so I choose to celebrate!  I’ve both navigated challenges and enjoyed successes during my life and the journey has shaped me into the woman I am today.  Why wouldn’t I want to own every single one of them?!!

I want to continue to embrace how deliciously messy and meaningful life is when I allow myself to feel fully whatever life brings me and I bring to life.  On that note, I find this is a very reflective and bittersweet place in my life.  I’m smack in between two generations within my family.  When I look at my nieces who have blossomed into lovely young women, I see promise and opportunity.  I’m reminded how much of my life has already unfolded and how quickly time passes.  When I visit my Mom in the skilled nursing facility where she now lives, I see a confused yet peaceful woman in a wheelchair whose resilient spirit and sense of humor still serve her well.  I am reminded that the next 30 years are even more precious.

With that in mind, as I approached my 50th birthday I made a promise to myself to lean even more fully into my life and do all the things I’ve “always wanted to do.” In that spirit, I’m establishing some goals to inspire me this year.  They’re all based on the number 50 in celebration of this special and (hopefully) memorable year:

1) Participate in 50 minutes of physical activity each day

2) Lose 50 pounds . . . ouch!  I’m putting it out into the universe and naming it to help me focus on it.  #1 above should help me achieve #2!

3) Personally connect with (live in person or by phone NOT text or email!) one person per week who I don’t see/speak to regularly

4) Do  50 things I’ve “always wanted to do” within the next year including:

  • Learn how to juggle
  • Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge
  • Learn how to shoot a bow and arrow
  • Attend a professional hockey game (the Olympics hooked me)
  • Visit the Bronx Zoo
  • Visit the NY Botanical Gardens in the spring
  • Learn Spanish and/or how to speak French more fluently
  • Get published
  • Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge
  • Attend bartender’s school
  • Visit Las Vegas (everyone has to go there once, right!?)

So, what have you always wanted to do?  What does leaning more fully into your life look like to you?  Join me in leaping and trusting the net will appear today and every day.  I’ll share my stories with you, and I hope you’ll share yours with me.  Together we’ll push beyond our self-limiting beliefs and live a joyful and satisfying life of choice . . . at any and every age!

Are you ready to thrive?

First of all I am stunned to learn that you are 50. I NEVER would have guessed you to be older than me. Frankly I never would have guessed you to be much over 40. That said, I may be able to help you with 1 of your “50 Things”. You may (or may not) be aware that I tended bar for several years. Though I don’t run a school, and I’m likely out of touch with the new “hot” drinks, I’d be happy to offer you my “Bartending According to Bob” chat whenever you have the time.

“Bartending According to Bob” sounds like the perfect start for me. I’ll be in touch soon! By the way, my favorite part of your response was “stunned!” ;-)
